Well-behaved color for southern shade gardens!
Those of you who live in warm southern states know that shade is a good thing. It provides a place to rest out of the blazing southern sun and heat. Unfortunately it can also be a challenging place to grow colorful and interesting things to make that resting place more. . .restful. To help with that Garden Center Point is proud to offer Bananappeal Small Anise Tree (Illicium parviflorum PIIIP-I’ PP28,887).
This is a compact form of native anise that has been bred to be better-behaved than other versions of illicium. (It is really a mid-sized shrub more than a small tree.) It won’t shoot out long gangly stems at random and the leaves won’t fade out in the winter. Instead, it stays in a nice round 3′ mound and has golden yellow leaves that practically glow in the shade.
The leaves smell like licorice when crushed or brushed so you’ll want to plant it somewhere where you can touch it and release the great smell into the garden.
Deer resistant, easy care and luminescent! This is a must have for your southern shade garden.
Because of its smaller stature and compact habit it makes a great container plant and works well on the shady patio or porch. It doesn’t tend toward suckering like other illiciums do, either, so it will stay where you put it in your shade garden. Once Bananappeal is established it is totally low-maintenance, which makes your restful shade garden even more restful.
People love it, but deer do not, so you don’t have to worry about it becoming part of a wildlife buffet.
