How to Grow and Care for Blues Little Bluestem Grass

Blues Little Bluestem Grass (Schizachyrium scoparium ‘The Blues’) Growing Requirements

Hardiness zone 4-10 outdoors

Plant your Bluestem in an area with full sun (about 6 hours of sunlight daily) and well-drained soil. Once you’ve chosen your location, dig a hole that’s large enough to accommodate your plant’s root ball, place your plant, backfill the soil and water to settle the roots.

You can also plant your grass in a pot. If you choose to do so, select a container that’s about twice as large as your plant’s shipped container (and ensure it has drainage holes), use organic soil mix, place your plant, and fill the pot with soil, leaving about 2 inches free at the top. Finally, water your newly-potted plant to settle the soil.

When the top of the soil feels dry down to about 2 or 3 inches, water your Bluestem.

Other than regular watering if your area does not receive consistent rainfall, Bluestem Grass requires very little additional maintenance.
