Chanticleer Flowering Pear (Pyrus calleryana ‘Glen’s Form’)

Chanticleer Flowering Pear

The Chanticleer Pear tree (Pyrus calleryana, ‘Glens Form’), also known as Callery Pears, is a space-saving tree with gorgeous spring blooms and fall color! Known for its tight, narrow, pyramidal form, the Chanticleer is also a thornless variety!

New growth shows a reddish tint. It displays a heavy abundance of single white flowers in the spring that pollinators adore! These Ornamental Pear trees feature a growth habit that is dense, evenly branched canopies that fill out with crisp glossy green foliage! Some specimens appear almost columnar in habit

Oval, glossy green leaves turn an attractive reddish-orange to purple in the autumn that accents the small fruitlets that can form if another Callery Pear is nearby to pollinate your Chanticleer tree. These are snapped up by hungry birds!

This deciduous tree is a true four-season tree with white flowers in early spring, and shiny, dark green foliage in summer that changes to long-lasting, dramatic shades of red and purple in mid to late autumn! In winter the tight, narrow form is a refined silhouette in the snowy winter landscape!

Chanticleer is an improved cultivar of the old Bradford Pear trees also known as Callery Pears, and also goes by the names ‘Cleveland Select’, ‘Glen’s Form’, ‘Select’, and ‘Stone Hill’. Its low-maintenance, hardy nature and beautiful year-round appeal make it a great choice as an ornamental landscape tree!

Planting and Application:

This beautiful specimen tree makes a perfect lawn or street tree for front yards where it is allowed to be grown. Use a single tree to anchor the corner of your home in a landscape bed. Or, plant one on either side of large-scale front entries as a gracious welcome home.

Plant these Ornamental columnar trees at least 15 feet away from the foundation of your house and 8 feet away from the curb. This will give the root system enough room to develop.

Flowering Pear is a versatile and space-saving addition to almost any landscape. This is a hardy ornamental tree with year-round appeal! Because this is a columnar tree growing more tall than broad, it nestles neatly into a narrow spot between other plants or looks great in rows along a street or sidewalk.

Plant them 15 feet apart, measuring from one tree’s center trunk to the next’s center trunk. Their tall, oval shapes will quickly grow together into a single, continuous screen. March them down the length of your driveway spaced at equal distances to create gorgeous curb appeal. These make fabulous screening backdrops along the property line!

Tips for Care:

Chanticleer Pear trees are very hardy and fast-growing, and are an excellent choice for a trouble-free, beautiful addition in any landscape situation! Just plant in full sun and well-drained soil of any type and you’ll have success! Provide new trees with regular watering and a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to hold moisture and insulate the root system.

The tree should be pruned after flowering if needed. Do prune out any secondary leaders that may develop as the tree is young, remove suckers, and water growth. Select your preferred leader in the dense crown and remove the other secondary leader completely.

You’ll get great results even in heat or pollution if you provide even watering while the tree is getting established in your soil.
