Chrysalis Blue Butterfly Bush (Buddleia x ‘Balchrylu’)

Chrysalis Blue Butterfly Bush

A gorgeous little shrub and vibrant bloomer! The Chrysalis™ Blue Butterfly Bush (Buddleia ‘Chrysalis Blue’) is a fantastic pollinator plant with gorgeous purple-blue pointed spires that rise right up to the sky while staying wonderfully compact and space-saving! Each tiny floret is accented by a bright orange eye!

The abundant flowers bloom from late spring into the fall! The aromatic green-to-gray-green is airy and fills out with tons of gorgeous foliage that is the perfect foil for the flowers! Standing tall atop the shrub for every butterfly, bee, and hummingbird to find and easily land on in the neighborhood.

Chrysalis™ Blue is hybrid Buddleia that is very resilient and root-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9 and can be stem-hardy in warmer locations. Growing into a neat and tidy mounded form that grows 20-28 inches tall when in bloom and spreads 18-24 inches wide. The fragrant blooms keep returning with regular deadheading, but that also means you will get more blooms for your bouquets and vase arrangments!

Planting and Application:

Butterfly Bushes are must-haves for Pollinator gardens, wildflower installations, and cut-flower gardens! Enliven Cottage and Perennial borders and add low front-of-the-border color to your mixed shrub hedges! Greet guests by planting several along your walkway or driveway. Use at the corners of your landscape to draw flying visitors, as well as highlight a garden bench or accent your seating areas in the sun.

Chrysalis™ Blue is compact enough for containers and planters on sunny porches and patios! The smaller size is fantastic for use as edging and facer plants that light up foundation borders, and evergreen hedges! Or add a pretty skirting around trees or shrubs that may be getting a bit leggy in their older age. Tough enough for Rock gardens and pretty enough for Rose gardens, Butterfly Bushes just shine in any setting!

Tips for Care:

Butterfly Bushes do best in full sun, where they will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Buddleias do best in well-drained soil. They won’t tolerate wet roots. Use containers or elevate the planting bed, if your soil drains slowly.

You’ll enjoy the largest flower display if you can deadhead the spent blooms. Provide a medium amount of water on a regular basis, so it can grow to its fullest potential. Don’t worry about the occasional vacation. These durable plants are water-wise! Deer don’t prefer the taste, so they are rarely damaged. Deadhead throughout the growing season to keep blooms returning, and prune back in the very early spring.

Buddleia as a species may grow a bit too well in certain areas. Don’t fear! We protect your local ecosystem with a software tool called Plant Sentry™. It helps Nature Hills follow all local, state, and federal regulations for plants that can become invasive.
