Large trees make a huge impact in yards and landscapes of all sizes. Nothing adds poise and polish like a towering, majestic tree. Now imagine if this large tree had a “stop you in your tracks” appearance and produced snacks each year! The Colossal Chestnut Tree (Castanea sativa x crenata ‘Colossal’) offers all that and more! It’s a tree that keeps on giving, chestnut that is!
Immediately upon looking at Colossal, you can’t help but notice its slightly tropical look. This hybrid has compound leaves and will sprout cute yellow flowers during late spring.
Colossal is a hybrid cross between a Japanese and European Chestnut that is reported to be resistant to Chestnut blight, a common issue with other kinds of Chestnut trees.
Along with it’s resistance to disease, it’s also an extremely prolific producer! During the fall, Colossal has been known to grow loads and loads of sweet nuts, sometimes exceeding 50 pounds per tree if there is good pollination in the area!
Of course, the only logical question is, what to do with all those chestnuts? Have no fear, there are countless ways to enjoy the nuts. The most common may be derived from the well known Christmas song “Let It Snow,” but if you don’t fancy roasting them, you could also boil the nuts and candy them. Yum!
You’ll absolutely love Colossal in your yard and the neighbors will awe in jealousy as you munch on Chestnuts all through the winter.
You could use Colossal Chestnut in a small informal group with a pollination partner for excellent nut production
Try planting a small grove near the back of your landscape. It will create a stunning backdrop for the rest of the garden and a lovely border for the yard.
Nuts are expensive and hard to find to purchase, so why not simply grow your own and enjoy a larger crop every year? Order just a couple of these trees and grow enough chestnuts to enjoy all year long!
Colossal is a sun lover and would appreciate nothing more than to be planted in a nice sunny spot.
It should thrive in well-drained soil. If you need to improve your drainage, create a mounded heap of soil 18 inches high and 3 feet wide. Plant directly in that mound.
All in all, this is a very easy tree to care for. Simply plant in the sun with some well draining soil and watch it grow, year after year. It shouldn’t be long before it produces its first harvest of chestnuts!
When it comes to magnificent landscape trees with low maintenance requirements, it doesn’t get any better than Colossal Chestnut Tree!
