Custard Candy Daylily (Hemerocallis ‘Custard Candy’)

Custard Candy Daylily

Get triple the color on Custard Candy Daylily (Hemerocallis x ‘Custard Candy’)! Creamy-yellow trumpets of broad overlapping petals, transition to bold maroon-red eyes before changing again to yellowish-green throats! Talk about a pollinator landing zone!

All this and fragrance too! The many scapes are filled with buds, each taking its turn opening for a day to give you a long display during the summer! Showing off against a superb backdrop of deep-green strappy foliage! Grassy foliage grows in defiance of the sun, wind, and rain. Custard Candy fills your gardens vividly all growing season!

Custard Candy is a sweet treat for the eyes and your local hummingbirds as well! Plus, it has a trick up its sleeve and reblooms again in the fall! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9, these Tetraploid Daylilies are stout, hardy, and have the best color and longevity!

Planting and Application:

Traditional sunny border plants, Daylilies add uniform beauty and texture as rows, garden borders, and by defining edges and graceful lining walkways and paths! They look lovely spilling over Rock Gardens and the edges of stone steps, and are the finishing touch cascading over the tops of retaining walls!

Pollinator and Perennial gardens are lovely sites, as are Cut Flower gardens! What’s best is how easy this perennial is to care for and assimilate into your landscape big or small! From small containers and window boxes to hillsides and slopes as erosion control and mass plantings – Daylilies are perfect for both commercial and residential sites.

Create focal points around seating areas, birdbaths, outdoor sculptures and urns. Or encircle trees, pergolas and gazebos with lush greenery skirting their base. Use as facer plants to hide the leggy bases of larger shrubs, along the fronts of your foundation plantings, and to perk up a weary evergreen hedge!

Many people employ Daylilies by their driveways and roads, because of how tolerant they are to salt spray in the winter, and how wonderfully Xeric they are! Plus Daylilies are on many fire-wise landscaping lists.

These space-saving lovelies are even perfect thrillers in planters and containers around your porch or patio in the sun! Fill planting tubs, and container gardens too! Don’t stress too much about where exactly to place this plant for the best effect!

Tips for Care:

Loving full sun and partial shade, Custard Candy shines either way! Not particular on soil type, any well-drained medium works for these perennials. Provide regular moisture until they are established, and once they are, Daylilies are drought tolerant. Though they appreciate a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to keep their roots insulated and hold moisture in more regularly.

Deadhead as soon as the summer flowers finish removing the flowering stems to the crown and you will be rewarded with new flowers in fall. Daylilies can sometimes be susceptible to rust and other foliage diseases, so it is important to cut all of the foliage to the ground in late fall after the plants have been exposed to a couple of frosts. Removing the foliage before winter prevents the overwintering of disease on the old leaves so it is best to always clean them up and dispose of the old foliage each year.

  • Full Sun & Part Shade
  • Cold Hardy & Heat Tolerant
  • Moderate Moisture Needs – Low Once Established
  • Deadhead Regularly, Prune Late Fall & Divide Every 3-5 Years
  • Easy Care & Low Maintenance
  • Cold Hardy & Long Bloom Time

Extremely cold and drought tolerant, Daylilies are tough, hardy, and adaptable! Mother Nature can throw everything at Daylilies without phasing them!
