Dark Blue Plumbago Shrub

Willow-like arching branches and a weeping mound effect set the Dark Blue Plumbago apart, along with its blueish-purple blooms that emerge in mid-summer to early fall. And because the Plumbago can grow in a container or even be trained onto a trellis or archway, it’s an extra versatile beauty.

Even better? The Dark Blue’s numerous flower clusters with five-petaled silhouettes. Plus, these blooms are a favorite for butterflies and hummingbirds while still being deer resistant. So, you get a dazzling wildlife show without any hassle, especially since it’s drought tolerant too.

But aside from its tropical-inspired vibes and low-maintenance care, our Plumbago is a top variety because we’ve planted, monitored and shipped it with care. We’ve grown it, and grown it well, from day one, so you get a proven performer in your homescape.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Though it’s highly adaptable, the Dark Blue Plumbago does need an area with well-drained soil and 4 to 8 hours of sunlight per day. Once you’ve selected your location, dig a hole that’s about one to two times the width of your plant’s root ball. If you’re planting your Plumbago in a container, select one that is about one and a half times the width of your plant. After planting, tamp down the soil and water to settle the roots.

2. Watering: Depending on the rainfall in your area, your newly planted Plumbago should be watered approximately once or twice weekly. After your plant is established, water it once every week or every two weeks. However, if you’re not sure when to water, simply check the surrounding soil about 2 to 3 inches down – if it’s dry, it’s time to water.

3. Fertilizing: Apply an all-purpose fertilizer once in the springtime and then again in the summer while it’s growing.

4. Pruning: Though the Dark Blue Plumbago doesn’t require pruning, you may prune it to your desired shape.
