Double Play Doozie Spirea
People across the country cherish the pretty good looks and landscape performance they expect from Spirea. Select a modern, reblooming Spirea for even more desirable benefits! Reblooming Double Play Doozie® Spirea (Spirea japonica DOUBLE PLAY Doozie ‘NCSX2’) breaks new ground in the flowering shrub market. It’s bred to be sterile, so this non-invasive variety spends every bit of its energy flowering and flowering all over again!
This compact shrub brings the heat starting in spring when the foliage emerges a brilliant red. How nice to see such bold color after the dreary, endless days of winter! Get ready to enjoy fantastic, rich purple-red blooms from early summer all the way up to the first frost! That’s months of flowers, without much work required on your part.
Plant this selection somewhere front and center. Then just sit back and watch as Doozie® kicks off a floral fireworks show to decorate your fun times with family and friends. This breakthrough blooms on both old wood from last year. And…it blooms on this year’s wood, too!
Low-maintenance and carefree, deadheading this variety is not required. However, you’ll get so many more blooms if you do spend a few minutes a month giving your plants a bit of love. It’s worth it!
Grow this mounding shrub in the ground, or use them as a filler all around the outside of extra-large containers. Leave these cold-hardy cuties outside all winter without worry.
In season, you’ll have plenty of blooms for cut flower arrangements indoors. And your local butterflies will go absolutely bananas for this showy selection.
Feel great about this high-value choice. Doozy® more than earns its keep in either full sun or partial shade. With this superior cultivar, you’ll even have fall color! As the nights get cooler, the leaves turn a fiery mix of bronzy-orange and golden-yellow shades.
Double Play® Doozie Spirea® is a home run for three full seasons of beauty. It asks for very little in return, which makes it an amazing choice for both residential and commercial properties.
Tuck this beauty into your existing mixed border or build a new flower bed around it. It is a real show-off all summer long.
They easily spice up mature foundation plantings. Edge your stolid, mainstay evergreen shrubs with these hot little shrubs. Or, carve out some additional space on either side of your front door for a wonderfully bold look. Plant several of them in a long, undulating curve. You’ll develop a beautiful ribbon of incredible color and carefree maintenance.
Run them the length of your patio or pool deck for a fun summer backdrop. Use them either in the ground or keep them in extra-large containers. Partner them with crisp, white blooms of mophead Hydrangea. You’ll make the most out of both varieties with this high-contrast garden feature.
Create a solid hedge by planting two feet apart on center. You’ll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. On a wide, open space, or commercial lot, you can easily create an astonishing flowering sight. Simply add additional rows of Double Play Doozie Spirea in a staggered, zigzagging planting pattern.
Mulch between the plants. You’ll also want to keep new mass plantings weeded until the plants grow together and touch.
This field-tested Proven Winners® selection features all the disease resistance that you expect. Once established in your landscape, it shows periodic drought tolerance and deer resistance, too.
Our expert plant team recommends the following environmental requirements to get the very best performance from your investment. Double Play® Doozie® is a tough, rugged plant…but why not support them to get the most intense flower power?
Plant them in either full sun or partial shade exposure, where they get at least four hours of direct sunlight a day. Afternoon shade is fine, especially if you live with scorching hot summers. Provide well-drained soils that shed water quickly after watering or rainfall. Elevate your planting site in a raised bed or planting mound, if needed.
They’ll love a few handfuls of organic compost added to their planting soil. Loosen your native soil all around your plants, and don’t forget to add Nature Hills Root Booster! This time-tested formula supports the tiny feeder roots over the entire life of your plant. Help the roots absorb water and micronutrients in one easy step – you’ll be so glad you did!
You’ll need to give container-grown plants a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. In-ground plants also need careful watering the first year, and in times of drought.
Apply a three-inch layer of mulch over their roots to cut down on surface evaporation. Mulch needs to be pulled back from touching the stems by several inches.
In early spring, prune back the stems to your desired size. We do recommend that you periodically deadhead the spent flowers to keep the show coming all the way through fall.
