Mandarin Tango is a modern cultivar of a wonderful native shrub. It stays small but lives large with intense orange hues that are kissed with a splash of red. Their superpower is growing blooms all summer long! Potentilla becomes the workhorse of your landscape. Great for xeric-scaping and fire-wise landscapes alike!

Some people call them shrubby or bush Cinquefoil and they are said to symbolize loyalty and strength. No worries if you are just getting started as a gardener. These low-maintenance outdoor plants are actually easy to grow These field-tested plants form a rounded shrub that tolerates Arctic cold. They become waterwise once established, and deer tend to pass them by, as well. Hardy in chilly winter climates throughout USDA growing zones 2 to 6, these darling little bloomers grow just 2-3 feet in width and height.

Mandarin Tango Potentilla is a great mixer from the Rose family. It will partner beautifully with a host of other plants for a dynamic landscape you’ll never grow tired of. Can you think of someone who might love one or two as a gift?

Planting and Application:

Plant just one, or use several Potentillas for a gracious low hedge that is absolutely covered in flowers. You’ll have plenty of blossoms on hand for cut flower arrangements, too…and don’t forget the dark green foliage as a perfect filler for your vase. Does your bare yard need a little boost? Make a cheery little accent planting with a low hedge along your sidewalk or beside the patio.

Use them all along the sun-soaked areas of your yard, or grow them in outdoor containers for a fun summer scene on your balcony. Use as a “Thriller” in outdoor containers. March a series of them all along the length of your pool deck and you’ll have a vivid setting for some serious fun! Keep Mandarin Tango® in pots nearby if space is at a premium…your bigger yields will be well worth the square footage.

Go big or take a baby step…either way, you’ll appreciate the flower power of Potentilla. Mix all of our varieties together in a wider planting bed for an easy designer look with blooms for months. Filter the results on our site for flowering perennials that bloom in spring, summer and fall.

Add these long-lasting shrubs to existing plantings as either an edging or foreground selection. Perennial gardens, cottage borders, and even Rose gardens gain a cheerful blooming powerhouse all growing season long. Mandarin Tango® will look fantastic with Shasta Daisy and Coneflower and are perfect for the foundation of your home.

Butterflies love flowers, and offering several options for them keeps them coming back for more, so mix and match with your favorites! Use as flowering edging and facer shrubs to hide the leggy bare stems of larger evergreen hedges and your foundation hedge! If you are growing your own food, use these heavy-duty flowering plants as a pretty border to your Victory Garden.

Mandarin Tango® flowers are a lovely way to jazz up mature evergreen trees and shrubs as a frilly skirting. Use three, five, or seven Potentillas planted in a collection of funky pots placed on their sunny side. Pro-tip…use an odd number of plants for an appealing display!

Tips for Care:

Provide full sun for the most flowers. They love at least six hours of direct sunlight a day…the more, the better! Look for a site with well-drained soil that doesn’t stay soggy for long. During the first season, consistent water establishes their root systems. Give them a drink during hot, dry weather to protect your investment. Please water container plants regularly, plus add a layer of mulch over the soil surface.

Prune to shape in early spring, but do not cut them down to the ground each year. Every three years, rejuvenate them by simply cutting down a few of the oldest, thickest stems and leaving younger stems in place.
