Gardenia Buttons (Gardenia jasminoides ‘Buttons’)
Oh, sweet gardenia! You are the muse for many a Southern dream, the delicious base note for innumerable perfumes and the intoxicating draw to secret gardens.
If you live in warm winter southern zones and have never grown gardenia, you should be ashamed. What’s been keeping you from it? Does it seem too challenging? Do they seem too big?
Well, we’d like to introduce you to lovely ‘Buttons’ Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides ‘Buttons’). This sweet little thing is as cute as a…well, you know.
It is perfectly sized to fit into modern urban gardens or to tuck into your favorite container. But just because the size is diminutive, don’t think anything else is! The alabaster white flowers are a full two inches across and have a darling button center. The scent matches the big flowers and will perfume your garden all summer long, especially first thing in the morning and at dusk. Make sure that you plant it somewhere it can be enjoyed up close.
Buttons make a great cut flower to bring the heady scent indoors, too. This is a relatively easy care gardenia in southern zones and makes a great foundation plant, front-of-the-border plant and is primo for planting under trees.
Don’t let another summer go by without having this dreamy flower in your garden.
