Planting & Care
If you’re looking for an easy-to-grow evergreen tree that will provide year-round green color, the Italian Stone Pine is a great option. Here are some tips for planting and caring for your tree:
- Planting: You can simply place your Italian Stone Pine near a sunny window, no planting required! However, if you do choose to plant it outdoors, make sure to plant in full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight) in growing zones 8 to 10. It’s also important to choose soil that drains well, as the Italian Stone Pine doesn’t like wet feet. Keep in mind that these trees can grow quite tall, so make sure to give them plenty of space. If you live in a colder region, bring your tree indoors for the winter.
- Watering: Check the soil about 1 to 2 inches down for dryness. When the soil is dry at this depth, it’s time to water your tree. Be sure not to overwater, as the Italian Stone Pine prefers drier soil.
These trees are also known for producing delicious pine nuts in the fall. You can expect your tree to begin bearing nuts at about age 6 to 8 years, and it will continue to produce for over 50 years!
