Mardi Gras Abelia adds a sweet and simple pop of color to any landscaping design. During the warm season, the variegated foliage transitions from light green to creamy white with pink tinted tips. The cooler seasons grace the shrub with a charming golden hue. An abundance of white, slightly fragrant flowers are produced during late spring to fall. These fragrant flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
With a beautiful spectrum of pale green, creamy white, and blushing pink, this plant is literally a Margi Gras of pigments. Not only is it versatile in the area you plant it in, but this plant is frost, drought, heat and deer resistant. Plant in Part shade to full sun.
With little maintenance, the Mardi Gras Abelia can go a long way. On occasion water shoots will develop, keep these trimmed up to maintain the roundness of the plant. To get the best results and color out of your Mardi Gras Abelia, it is advised to plant 5-6 ft. apart to allow room for mature growth, plant in full sun for best color results, and provide a slow release, high nitrogen fertilizer in the spring.
This eye-catching shrub provides an abundance of bright pastel color with little care and will definitely add curb appeal to any home or place of business. Add some Soft Touch Holly or Green Mountain Boxwood shrubs into the mix for a great look!
Planting Time: Any time of the year taking care to avoid temperature extremes, especially the height of summer.
Sun: Full sun for best blooming
Soil: Very adaptable, but fertile, well drained is ideal
Water: Deeply water when newly planted and once or twice weekly during establishment. Once established, only minimal watering is needed and generally only during extended periods of dry, hot weather.
Fertilization: A fertilizer for flowering shrubs like Rhododendrons will work great for Abelias. The best times to fertilize are early spring and/or early summer.
Pruning: Abelias do not generally require pruning, but if pruning is desired winter is best.
