Introducing the Murray Cypress Tree (X Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Murray’) is a fantastic fluffy green version of the larger Leyland Cypress but with new and improved disease resistance and pest resistance! Bright green new growth ages to slightly darker green and you’ll love its perfect shape when left to grow in its natural conical growth habit.
Fast-growing to their mature 30-40 feet in height and only spreading 6-10 feet wide, these evergreen trees hold their branches clear to the ground for sublime privacy and protection. The wonderfully straight stems and strong and stand up to the wind. Deer seldom bother with these trees but birds love to roost and nest in their dense, fluffy, soft needles.
The Murray Leyland Cypress Tree tolerates humidity and heat, and more moisture than other members of the family. Making them ideal for the southeastern US. Handling coastal sites and salt better too, occasional wet periods and damper soil (as long as it is well-drained) are no problem for this tree!
Planting and Application:
Handling high winds wonderfully, the dense branching and thick foliage offer year-round sound dampening, wind reduction, and even block drifting snow throughout USDA growing zones 6 to 10. You’ll love creating living fencing and walls around your property, or enclosing your seating areas in lush privacy year-round!
Murray Cypress Tree grows pretty quickly, giving you a mean green screen in a hurry. Their tolerance for wet feet makes them great for use with Bald Cypress around water features, coastal regions, and in Rain Gardens where moisture from driveways or hills runs down and collects.
The narrow columnar growth puts this tree in contention with Italian Cypress and Arborvitaes as formidable hedging and space-saving garden punctuation with their slim profile! Each tree has a uniform look and is cloaked in green from top to bottom.

Tips for Care:
Cypress needs a bit of extra care to get them established. The garden adage “First year, they sleep, the second year they creep and third year they leap”, applies to many young trees, so baby them the first year, then watch them go! Plant in full sun and enriched, well-drained moist soil with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch for best results. Cypress Trees are evergreens that do appreciate extra moisture during drought and extra water before winter. Avoid planting in unprotected locations that receive the brunt of drying northern winds in their colder USDA growing zone range. Use an anti-desiccant on your evergreens to help them through the winter months.
