My Monet Purple Effect® Weigela grows to a mature height of about 30 inches tall and 30 inches wide giving you a deciduous plant that can work in numerous ways in your landscaping! You can plant the magnificent Purple Effect® as a pretty groundcover, as low-growing hedging, or as a low-maintenance mass planting. No matter what the use is, it will catch everyone’s attention and leave a lasting impression! Like its namesake artist, My Money Purple Effect® paints like an impressionistic painting either as a solo specimen or when planted in drifts!
Using this colorful shrub as a container plant on your porch or patio will give you and your guest a perfect plant to sit and admire all day! Plant around your entrance for a gorgeous welcome, or around seating areas where you’ll love watching the hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees dance! From adding a pop of bright color to borders to adding some glitz and sparkle to your mixed-shrub beds! Try mixing and matching with other Weigela shrubs like the My Monet® Pink Weigela for a variety of pink and purple hues!
Weigela shrubs thrive best in full sun, requiring at least six hours a day, with eight or more just improving the color and quality. Super easy to grow and doesn’t fuss or require fussing, Weigela are very late to leaf out in spring, so be patient if you don’t see signs of life on your shrub. Doing best in average garden soils, Weigela enjoys moderate moisture levels. Weigela does need well-drained soils but is not particular on the soil type. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture in the ground as well as insulates the root system from heat and chill.
Dwarf Weigela won’t need pruning, trimming, or deadheading in order to rebloom. However, if you wish to give them some pruning, just be sure to do it right after that first spring flush of color. Weigela does benefit from a renewal pruning every few years, with the oldest stems removed that are not as productive to keep the shrub dense, loaded in blooms and lushly covered in foliage.
You won’t be able to get enough of this plant!
