Late-season blooming ornamental pompoms, the Ardens Rose of Sharon Shrub (Hibiscus syriacus ‘Ardens’) is an absolutely vivid flowering ornamental shrub. Beloved for its 3-inch, double blooms and hardy nature.
Ardens’ vibrant green foliage, with its diamond shape and serrated edges, is the perfect backdrop for the gorgeous blossoms that appear mid-summer and last into autumn! You’ll adore the elegant, glowing lavender shade of the blooms, delightfully ruffled in appearance with a dark maroon splash of color at the center that seems to beckon you in for a closer look – as well as every bee and butterfly that happens by your yard! Ardens Rose of Sharon makes your home as a welcomed stop for Hummingbirds too!
Ardens Rose of Sharon has an upright, multi-stemmed nature and vase shape. Ardens is adaptable to a variety of conditions and will even thrive in partial shade. It’s long-lived and in fact, under ideal conditions, it can be expected to live up to 40 years. In the autumn, your Ardens’ foliage will take on a slight yellow hue for one last gasp of color before the long winter’s rest. An easy to grow deciduous shrub in USDA growing zones 5 to 9, you’ll love the upright, fluffy oval form it creates with very little maintenance!
Planting and Application:
Rose of Sharon is an outstanding flowering shrub for your yard. It’s not only hardy, easy to care for, and flowers profusely, but it becomes a nectar-rich boon to localpollinators. A single Ardens becomes a magnificent specimen plant and planting several together looks amazing at the back of the border or along your fence line! Add Ardens to punctuate a mixed shrub border and highlight the darker green of evergreen hedges to soften their look. Count on their dense branching to give you privacy, even during the winter months.
This variety could be the perfect choice for screening all along the outside of your pool deck. Lavish flowering hedges will boost your privacy, and create “living walls” of a garden room. Plant a few en masse around the entrance to your property for a cheery roadside welcome, or perhaps just a couple near your front door to impress guests! No matter where these lovely shrubs reside, they’re sure to make an impression.

Tips for Care:
Related to tropical and hardy Hibiscus, Ardens Althea is easy to grow and has no serious insect or disease problems! It is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions and tolerant of full sun all day but also handles partial shade! Rose of Sharon does need well-drained soil but is not particular on the type and even doing well in poor soils. Give them a regular schedule of medium water, especially when they are young plants. Apply a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering plants at the same time. Follow application rates on the label.
Add a thick layer of arborist mulch in containers and in-ground plants alike. You’ll cut down on surface evaporation with this useful garden must-have, plus provide much-needed insulation from heat and cold.
Rose of Sharon has no significant insect or disease issues, is heat and humidity tolerant, and is relatively hardy overall. Deadhead your shrub after flowers fade to remove seedheads before they mature to prevent self-seeding. These blossoms are large, but you can make them even larger by hard pruning in spring and renewal prune every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.
