More eggplant than amethyst, Buzz Midnight blooms are composed of many hundreds of tiny flowers. You’ll be thrilled to see how popular they are with butterflies.
Keep your camera nearby! Monarch and Swallowtail butterflies are among the many varieties that will come to call.
In the past, species Buddleia (which has been renamed to Buddleja) was a rangy shrub that self-seeded. They were always a rich nectar source…but grew to become a problem for many states.
Nature Hills prides itself on following each and every state and federal regulation on plant materials. That’s why we’ve partnered with a cutting-edge shipping software called Plant Sentryâ„¢.
We are also proud to offer the sterile Buzz series of Butterfly Bushes. No seed means no problems with problematic seedlings.
Relax in your space with these beautiful woody deciduous plants. Their lance-shaped leaves look cool and refreshing in the heat of summer.
Their lush growth arches up in a tightly compact habit. These are well-branched—yet open and airy—shrubs that make an impressive “see through” accent near the edge of your mixed shrub borders.
Grow them in the ground, or pop them into large outdoor containers. You’ll be delighted with the gorgeous, 6-inch, dark purple flowers from the middle of summer through frost.
The fragrant arched flower panicles can be used in rustic cut flower arrangements. Dry them in the vase for a pretty wintertime display indoors.
Buzz Midnight Butterfly Bushes are a wonderful late season nectar resource for butterflies, hummingbirds and honeybees. Your choice will keep these precious helpers healthy and well-nourished!
Include larval caterpillar host plants like Swamp Milkweed to create a fully integrated Butterfly Garden. We offer so many beautiful plants for pollinators!
Turn a portion of your front yard into a learning opportunity for your neighborhood. Or simply add loads of these charming flowering plants into your existing plantings.

How to Use Buzzâ„¢ Midnight Butterfly Bush in the Landscape
No matter how small or large your space is…you’ll be able to utilize the carefree beauty of these important shrubs. They add an attractive depth of color without looking oppressive or stolid.
Pump up the visual appeal of tired, old foundation plantings. Expand them outward to include a layer of these jewel-toned blooms.
They partner beautifully with Prairie-style native plants like Coreopsis, Gaillardia and Echinacea. Contrast them with the architectural foliage and tall flower spikes of Yucca.
Or, use them as a very modern alternative to annual bedding plants. Fill the center of a Boxwood-lined garden bed with these long-lasting, woody deciduous plants.
Use them together with a range of flowering bulbs from Crocus, to Daffodil, Tulip and Allium. You’ll create a high-performance flowering display from spring through frost. They’ll come back for you year after year!
These plants are often listed on Firewise Landscaping state lists. Include them in your defensible space surrounding your property.
Growing veggies? Line the “company-side” of your Victory Garden with a row of them and you’ll get a larger harvest during the second planting of the season.
Cottage Gardens need these mounded plants. Try them as a hard-working low hedge to provide a welcome bit of definition.
Plant them two feet apart on center for a solid hedge. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
Commercial properties will attract a lot of attention with mass plantings that fill open areas. Stagger additional rows to create a butterfly and hummingbird paradise.
Don’t forget to place seating nearby, as people working for your tenants will want to sit and study all the special flying visitors. Hype up your efforts in sustainable property management on social media and sales materials!
Tips for Care
Give them full sun with at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. The more sun…the more blooms.
They need well-drained soil. Elevate your plantings in a raised bed, if needed, as they won’t tolerate wet soils.
These waterwise plants do need careful attention to watering until their root systems are well established. Please provide a consistent amount of water regularly during their first season in the ground.
They’ll become drought tolerant with age. However, we do recommend you give growing plants supplemental water as needed in prolonged drought.
Deadhead the spent blooms for a longer lasting performance. It’s an easy way to sneak in some time in your garden…and the extra blooms are well worth the minimal effort.
Do not prune your Buddleja in early fall. Wait until spring and then cut your plants back to about a foot.
In colder climates, it may die back to the ground and is used more like a perennial. In spring, simply cut all stems right down to the roots and allow new growth to develop from the crown.
Maximize your garden with these generous plants. Tidy, special Buzz Midnight Butterfly Bush are a wonderful way to support your local ecology.
