Edible Landscaping is a garden design trend that has caught the attention of millions of people just like you. It seems like everyone is waking up to the idea of augmenting their food supply with fruiting trees.
These stay small enough to decorate the background of your Victory Garden! Add fruit trees for a fun, healthy snack. Mini Snow Babe Peach Tree (Prunus persica ‘Snow Babe’) will make it look good, too!
Grow your own peaches in containers on a balcony, porch or patio. Or create a tiny orchard with a few other varieties that ripen a bit earlier or later than Mini Snow Babe.
These firm, flavorful peaches are white-fleshed and sugar sweet. Enjoy them fresh in the mid-season, or freeze them for use later.
Your friends and family are sure to help you with your harvest.
Enjoy the gorgeous pink blooms in springtime. They are fragrant, and a perfect backdrop for an early season party!
Besides spring blooms, Mini Snow Babe also features long, tropical-looking leaves that are held densely. Can you use a little more privacy in your landscape?
Leverage these “shaggy” small trees as a hard-working privacy screen along your fence. Plant them right behind your patio seating in a mulched garden bed.
Technically, all you need is a single tree, because these are self-pollinating trees. However, please know that you will get a more bountiful harvest with a partner tree.
Just watch out, you’ll be tempted to start a collection! And why not? The fruit is so fun to watch as it develops.
The trees might be small, but the fruit is full-sized! Pick your peaches when you see the skin around the stem start to wrinkle a bit. Gently squeeze one to see if it is still hard, or if it’s starting to soften up.
Taste one or two of them to test. It’s ok to test another one. There is nothing like a juicy peach, tree-ripe and still warm from the sun!
Use them in smoothies, or slice them and bake homemade cobblers and pies. They dehydrate beautifully for a healthy snack later in the year.
It’s nice to know just where your food is coming from, and you’ll know exactly how it was grown. Enjoy the fruits of your harvest.
You’ll fall in love with these cute little trees, too. They make a very special “plant pet” for your whole circle of friends and family to comment on.
Kids adore them. After all, they are just their size.
How to Use Mini Snow Babe Peach Tree in the Landscape
These versatile “mini trees” make a big impact wherever you plant them. They’ll do great in the ground, if you have the room.
Make the most out of your sunshine with a mini orchard. Plant a staggered double row of Mini Snow Babe Peach and other dwarf fruiting trees 8 feet apart from each other. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
Don’t have the room? No problem.
By now, you’ve probably seen those big exterior pots being used in high-end commercial properties. Mini Snow Babe can be easily grown in a 24-inch diameter pot.
Jazz up your patio with a series of them marching along the entire length of your space. Pro tip, use an odd number of plants. It looks more pleasing to the eye.
For elevated balconies and decks, it’s worth looking at lightweight resin pots. Drill additional drainage holes. In a windy area, use ties to anchor them to the railing.
On the patio, dress them up or down as you like. Ceramic pots will likely become permanent garden features.
Add those little pottery “feet” under your pot to elevate them a bit to improve drainage. Please don’t use saucers under exterior pots.
Go all out with your Edible Landscape, and use fruiting plants in your foundation planting. There are some amazing-looking fruiting plants. Start a hobby, and gain a tremendous amount of satisfaction.
There is nothing like walking your property and picking your own homegrown ingredients. Enjoy!
Tips for Care
Give Mini Snow Babe full sun, the more the better. They require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.
Peaches also need well-drained soil. Use a raised bed or grow them in a container if you see puddles that remain long after a rainfall.
Ensure it receives a medium amount of water regularly. Water especially well the first year, and during fruit development each year.
If you are growing them as container trees, you need to pay careful attention to watering. Don’t let them dry out!
Set up a drip irrigation system to make it easier. You’ll also save water by applying a 3-inch layer of wood mulch over the root system.
Give your tree an all-purpose, slow-release, organic fertilizer in early spring. You’ll want to follow the directions on the label.
Peaches should be pruned into an open center, vase-shape. Create and maintain a series of scaffolding branches that are 45-degree angles to the main trunk.
In late winter, eliminate crossing branches and those that are growing into the center of the tree. Your goal at this time is to increase sunlight and air circulation in the canopy.
Add the charming Mini Snow Babe Peach tree to your life this season.
