What is Purple Fountain Grass

Purple Fountain Grass packs a one-two punch. First, it delivers purplish, burgundy-red foliage that sets your garden apart. And in addition to its unmatched foliage, it produces fluffy, purple flower spikes in the heat of summer for even more vibrancy.

And this gem of a plant is also a botanical bird feeder. The Purple Fountain’s purple-plumed flowers are a natural source of sustenance for birds, making it ideal for adding to your pollinator garden.

But the best part? Because we’ve planted, nurtured, and shipped your Purple Fountain Grass with absolute care, you reap the rewards. Unlike similar varieties at big-box stores, your Purple Fountain is not only unique but is also a proven performer.

We’ve done the hard work at our nursery so that you get consistent color and growth month after month.

Don’t wait…this showy ornamental grass sells quickly. Order your own Purple Fountain Grass today, before it’s gone!

Note: If you purchase this grass in fall-winter, it may be cut back for the plant’s health. If your grass is cut back, don’t worry – it will grow even happier and healthier next spring!

How to Grow and Care for Purple Fountain Grass

Purple Fountain Grass (Pennisetum setaceum rubrum) Growing Requirements

Hardiness zone 9-11 outdoors

Planting

Plant your Purple Fountain in an area with full sun (about 6 hours of sunlight daily) and well-drained soil. Once you’ve chosen your location, dig a hole that’s large enough to accommodate your plant’s root ball, place your plant, backfill the soil and water to settle the roots.

You can also plant your grass in a pot. If you choose to do so, select a container that’s about twice as large as your plant’s shipped container (and ensure it has drainage holes), use organic soil mix, place your plant, and fill the pot with soil, leaving about 2 inches free at the top. Finally, water your newly-potted plant to settle the soil.

Watering

When the top of the soil feels dry down to about 2 or 3 inches, water your Purple Fountain.

Other than regular watering if your area does not receive consistent rainfall, Purple Grass requires very little additional maintenance.
