Radiance Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora ‘Radiance’)

Radiance Abelia

Dwarf, broad-leaved evergreen Radiance Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora ‘Radiance’ PP# 21929) provides outstanding landscape value. Enjoy fragrant white blooms all summer time long; and wonderfully variegated foliage.

Part of the Southern Living Plant Collection, Radiance is a beautiful evergreen with incredible changing foliage that really “pops” against new red stems. New leaves are green and soft yellow, and they age to silvery-green edged with cream.

Planting and Application:

These petite plants stay compact, spreading a bit wider than they are tall—a great size for small space gardens. Insect and deer-resistant, they are evergreen in all but the coldest zones rated, where they behave as a semi-evergreen.

  • Many homeowners like you use Radiance Abelia as showy, easy-care hedges, and mass plantings to fill in bare ground on slopes. Space them 30 inches apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next for a colorful garden feature!
  • If your foundation planting has seen better days, jazz them up with these dynamic small shrubs. Rip out and replace old, overgrown evergreens…or extend the bed out a bit for a pretty border of sophisticated Radiance Abelia.
  • You can easily grow them in outside containers for many years! Decorate your courtyard, terrace or balcony with their near-effortless charm.
  • Don’t be afraid to include them in mixed borders, as well. They make an eye-catching choice in the mid-layer and bring structure to your design of companion plants.
  • Use these as a mainstay in your Butterfly Garden. Their brilliant foliage will polish up the look and crisp white blooms will also attract hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators!

Tips for Care:

Radiance Abelia grows well in either full sun or part shade, with at least four hours of sunlight each day. They’ll need well-drained soil and a moderate amount of supplemental water the first season and during dry weather.

  • Deer don’t prefer the taste of Abelia. However, if you live in an area with heavy deer pressure, we always recommend using repellent on the day you plant and reapply according to the label directions.
  • It blooms on new wood, so prune to shape up your Abelia each year in early spring. Every few years, remove a few of the thickest, oldest stems at that time to keep your shrub vigorous.
