Planting and Application:

Many people mistake this woody deciduous shrub for an Azalea or Rhododendron during the first round of spring flowers. In bloom, the plant actually looks red, and the green foliage doesn’t register much, if at all. A real show-stopper in the landscape!

Perfect for a Pollinator Garden, this hardworking shrub grows into a naturally rounded shape. No matter where you use them, you’ll be adding tons of color!

Use them as a colorful anchor in sunny, mixed garden borders. Picture a staggered row along the back of your perennial garden with screaming red flowers as the backdrop to your favorite perennials. These long-lasting flowers make a splash as cut flowers in bouquets. Brilliant!

Don’t forget Weigela does attract Hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to its color and delicious nectar. This makes a colorful and carefree shrub, providing tremendous amounts of color and vibrant life to your landscape.

Try Red Prince as a modern take on foundation planting. You could also plant just one as a specimen plant near your front door, where its sporadic bloom will be a delight all summer long!

Tips for Care:

Plant in most any soil as long as it is well drained. A sunnier location will allow the most flowers. Red Prince has no significant disease or insect issues and is hardy in a wide area. Weigela roots prefer well-drained soil and supply a moderate amount of supplemental water if you don’t get enough rain. It takes off like a pretty, colorful rocket in well-drained soil and a moderate amount of water. It doesn’t have any significant disease or pest problems, so you can be assured of an easy-to-care-for plant. Best of all between the brilliant flowers and picturesque foliage, the beautiful Proven Winners® shrub gives season-long color. Provide a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over the root system.

Red Prince blooms best in June on last year’s stems, so don’t prune your plant until the first spring flush of blooms is finished. Far better to plan to give it enough room to spread out into its fluffy, mature height and width so you won’t have to prune it. Renew older plants by removing a third of the oldest, fattest stems all the way down to the ground. Leave the younger, thinner branches for the best bloom and a more natural form. Either way, you’ll enjoy a sporadic rebloom later each summer or fall too!
