Asarum europaeum, also known as European hardy ginger are robust and reliable groundcover plants very suitable for shady areas of the garden. These low, spreading plants have sweetly pungent roots hence their common name of ‘hardy ginger’.
It’s an evergreen perennial forming carpets of kidney-shaped, glossy, dark green leaves. The Purple-green flowers can be sought out beneath the leaves in spring.
Looks great and combines well with Hosta plants and primroses.

How to take care of Asarum europaeum
Plant in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well drained soil (preferably neutral to acid). Be careful as they do not like waterlogged soils. The plants can take a few years to establish but once established, the plants will self-seed sparingly.
Divide carefully in early spring. We recommend a light mulch of leaf mould or garden compost every one or two years to maintain soil fertility.
