Japanese Boxwood enjoys being planted in sun to partial sun for best color in the fall. Tolerant of more shade in hot climates, Boxwood especially prefers afternoon shade in the warmer growing zones where some shade from that summer heat is a welcome reprieve! Readily pruned to about any shape or form you need, your imagination will be the only thing holding you back!

Boxwood grows in most types of moderately moist soil so long as it is well-drained, and because of that, it’s advised to avoid planting in heavy clay. Amend the soil with silt, sand, or organic material for best results. If puddles remain on your soil after a heavy rain, or watering, consider elevating the planting area. Add 18 – 24 inches of soil above the native soil line and plant your tree directly in that mound.
