How to Grow and Care for Milkweed Plant

Milkweed Plant (Gomphocarpus physocarpus) Growing Requirements

Hardiness zone 8-10 outdoors

Planting

Start by finding an area with full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day) and well-drained soil for your Milkweed Plant.

When you’ve selected a location, dig a hole that’s about twice the size of your plant’s root ball and just as deep. Place the Milkweed Plant, tamp down the soil and water the surrounding soil to settle the roots. We recommend applying mulch after planting to conserve moisture.

Watering

Check your soil about 2 to 3 inches down for dryness to determine when to water your plant. If the soil around your Milkweed Plant is dry, water the plant. However, watering your plant about once or twice weekly is a good rule of thumb.

Pruning

For a tidier appearance, remove old and faded foliage and blooms during the dormant season in winter, before new growth emerges. You can also divide the Milkweed Plant clumps every 2 to 3 years during early spring.
