Big, dramatic, elegant and lacy Ornamental Grasses are the backbone of a fleshed-out landscape design, and one Grass stands out head and shoulders above the rest! The Red Silver Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Rotsilber’) has it all! Height, color, movement, adaptability, silky plumes, and supreme versatility in the garden!
This warm-season Grass has arrow-like silvery foliage that is topped with dramatic reddish-purple flowers in fall. Also known as Japanese Silver Grass, the fine-textured leaves are light, sage-green in color with pointy white spines. As an added bonus, the foliage turns a gorgeous gold in the fall and then ages to tan while persisting throughout the winter months!
Wonderfully adaptable and cold-hardy down to USDA growing zones 4 through 8, Miscanthus takes the place of Pampas grass in Northern gardens! Use the plumes as home décor and floral design – both fresh and dried – to beautify your space indoors and out! This plant is deer resistant but attracts birds!
Planting and Application:
Use Red Silver Miscanthus as a spectacular specimen plant! Anchor garden beds and your home’s foundation with one of these flowy, architectural accents! If you have a large planter or container in need of a vertical thriller, plant a Red Silver Maiden Grass in it with some flowers around the base, add some casters and you got yourself a rolling, positionable and portable screen or shade plant that moves where you need it throughout the seasons!
The 4 to 7-foot height makes this Ornamental Grass ideal as a background planting to add sound and motion to your landscape and highlight all plants installed before it like a living wall! Create outdoor rooms and install rows or groupings around your seating areas as a flowing screening plant.

Tips for Care:
Warm-season Ornamental Grasses have the strongest, most vertical growth in full sun, but also do well in partial shade. However, they will be more flowing and less erect in less than 6 hours of direct sun a day. Requiring well-drained soil that is never soggy or water-logged, Red Silver Maiden Grass prefers to grow in average to moist conditions, and shouldn’t be allowed to dry out. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments, and will grow in many different soil types and pH levels! Low-maintenance and upkeep, Miscanthus only requires a once-a-year spring pruning before it resumes active growth for the season.
